Update: I published this blog the same day the OpenAI released 10 Deep Research prompts a month for the $20 ChatGPT Plus tier. Gotta move fast in the AI world!
As a small business owner and AI advisor, I’ve been fielding a lot of questions about AI research tools. With OpenAI’s ChatGPT commanding a steep $200 monthly fee, the question I hear most is: “Is it really worth it?” To find out, I put my own money on the line to test ChatGPT against Google’s Gemini ($20/month) and Perplexity (free).
TLDR: Quick Comparison
| Feature | OpenAI ChatGPT O3 Deep Research ($200/mo) | Google Gemini Deep Research 1.5 ($20/mo) | Perplexity Deep Research (Free) |
| Best For | Strategic planning, complex analysis | Daily marketing research | Quick insights, fact-checking |
| Key Differentiator | Asks clarifying questions before research | Google Workspace integration | Real-time sourcing |
| Research Depth | Most comprehensive (2-3x longer than others) | Good depth with practical focus | Concise but thorough |
| Source Quality | Academic & industry sources | Recent web sources | Broad range of current sources |
| Export Options | PDF, Text, Word | Google Docs integration | Web links, Text |
| Value for Money | ⭐⭐⭐ | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ |
The Test: Real-World Marketing Challenge
To test these tools, I gave each the same complex prompt about AI-driven marketing automation – a topic relevant to my work helping small businesses navigate AI implementation. Here’s how each performed:
OpenAI ChatGPT O3 Deep Research ($200/month)
The premium option immediately stood out by asking clarifying questions before diving into research:
- Did I need industry-specific examples?
- Should it focus on particular business types?
- Were budget constraints a key concern?
- Did I want implementation strategies based on business size?
This pre-research dialogue resulted in more targeted information, though it slightly extended the process. The final output was notably more comprehensive and better organized than the other tools.
Google Gemini Deep Research 1.5 ($20/month)
Gemini skipped the preliminary questions and went straight to work. While lacking ChatGPT’s interactive refinement, it delivered solid research with practical implementation steps. At 10% of ChatGPT’s cost, the value proposition here is strong, especially if you’re already using Google Workspace.
Perplexity Deep Research (Free)
The free option surprised me. Perplexity provided clear, well-structured information with comprehensive source citations. For basic research needs, it’s remarkably capable, making me question whether paid tools are necessary for many small businesses.
Source Quality Deep Dive
The quality and reliability of sources matter, especially for business research. Here’s how each tool handled citations:
ChatGPT:
- 21 distinct sources cited
- Heavy emphasis on academic papers and industry reports
- Recent citations (2024-2025)
- Strong focus on peer-reviewed content
- Detailed statistics from research papers
Gemini:
- 18 sources referenced
- Mix of industry blogs and Google properties
- Current news sources
- Fewer academic citations
- Practical business case studies
Perplexity:
- 15 sources cited
- Real-time web integration
- Most sources from last 6 months
- News articles and business publications
- Emphasis on current trends
The Real Cost Consideration
Let’s talk about that $200 monthly ChatGPT subscription. As a solo entrepreneur, this isn’t a trivial expense – it’s $2,400 annually. Here’s what else that could buy:
- Full year of Gemini ($240) plus a complete social media management suite
- Multiple specialized AI tools for specific tasks
- Professional development courses for your team
- Significant paid advertising budget
This perspective made me seriously question whether ChatGPT’s premium features justify passing up other valuable marketing investments.
My Real-World Strategy
After thorough testing, here’s my practical approach:
- Start with Perplexity (Free)
- Perfect for quick research needs
- Reliable source citations
- No risk to try
- Consider Gemini ($20/month) if you need:
- More comprehensive research
- Google Workspace integration
- Regular daily research support
- Only upgrade to ChatGPT ($200/month) when:
- You have a clear use case for premium research
- The cost is justifiable against your budget
- You need the most comprehensive analysis
- Interactive query refinement is valuable
Bottom Line: Is ChatGPT Worth $200?
While ChatGPT delivers the best research experience, the value proposition at $200/month is challenging for most small businesses. Here’s my honest take:
Worth It If:
- You regularly need deep, nuanced research
- Your business decisions rely heavily on comprehensive market analysis
- You value interactive refinement of research queries
- Time savings from better research quality justifies the cost
Not Worth It If:
- You’re just starting out
- Your research needs are basic or occasional
- Budget is tight
- You mainly need fact-checking or quick overviews
I’m currently maintaining my ChatGPT subscription for one more month to thoroughly test its capabilities for my EU market expansion research. However, for most small business owners, I recommend starting with Perplexity and upgrading to Gemini if you need more depth. The $200 ChatGPT subscription, while impressive, is a luxury rather than a necessity for most small business research needs.
Looking Ahead
All three tools are rapidly evolving, and their capabilities (and pricing) may change. I’ll update this comparison as significant changes occur. For now, start with the free option and work your way up only when you have a clear business case for the additional investment.
Test conducted in February 2025. Features and pricing subject to change (like everything with AI these days).
